It's easier to get started hiking in Hong Kong than in other parts of the world. Many tracks are well-paved with plenty of tracknotes available online, through the internet or on YouTube. Several tips for a safe trip:
Get an app with topographic information of the country park
Ribbons with various colours are good for wayfinding. Check against maps to make sure it leads to the intended destination.
Bring plenty of water. During summer a quick rule: 1hr hike = 500mL water. No water, no hike.
Take plenty of breaks during summer. Depending on heat it may mean a small break during 20, 50 or 100m of vertical climb
While it is fairly easy to deviate from route for a quicker exit, be prepared to finish the entire route. Know the length, duration and everyone's skill level.
